"Needs Assessment Workshop - NH ASTD Trainer Certificate Program"
Date: March 31, 2004; 9:00 am to 4:00 pm (Lunch is provided.)
Location: NHCTC PEASE CAMPUS, NH (Directions).
Purpose: To help trainers, HR professionals, consultants and others learn how to plan a sound needs assessment to discover training needs and plan a solution that will have maximum impact on an organization.
Description: Nothing wastes training resources more than providing training when it is not the right solution. A sound needs assessment helps to ensure training is directed where it can have the most impact. This fun, interactive, and informative workshop will enable you to learn the fundamentals of needs assessment. Methods include group discussion, individual exercises and team exercises. By working on real training situations, participants will be able to apply learning to their own work environments.
Learning Objectives
1. Define needs assessment/needs analysis (NA)
2. Explain the benefits of conducting a NA
3. Determine when to conduct a NA
4. Identify different methods of assessing needs and explain the advantages and disadvantages of each
5. Identify criteria for selecting NA methods
6. Identify do's and don'ts for creating various NA tools, e.g. focus group, interview guide, questionnaire
7. Plan their NA approach (identify information to collect, methods to use, who to involve, evaluate effectiveness)
8. Prepare to document and present NA findings to have a positive impact

• Overview of needs assessment-definitions, benefits and when to conduct one
• Advantages and disadvantages of methods and approachhes (interviews, focus groups, surveys, organizational data, benchmarking, observation, etc.)
• Practice creating a needs assessment tool in aa small group
• Using the needs assessment planning tool to createe a sound approach
• Documentation and presentation of assessment results
Biography:
Dr. Carol P. McCoy has over 25 years experience in human resource development in education, business, and not-for-profit organizations both as an internal and an external consultant and teacher. She owns McCoy Training and Development Resources and Find-Your-Roots.Com, based in Falmouth, Maine.
A frequent conference presenter, Dr. McCoy served as chairperson of the Maine ASTD Conference 2000 and was featured speaker at ASTD's International Conference in 2002. She will be giving a workshop-Small Training Department-Big Impact- at the ASTD 2003 Conference in San Diego. She has written numerous articles and two books on training: Managing a Small HRD Department: You Can Do More Than You Think, and In Action: Managing a Small Training Department. She earned her Ph.D. and M.S. in psychology from Rutgers University, and her A.B. from Connecticut College.
